of Education sponsors educator workshops through the ENTICE program.
These workshops offer Professional Development Hours for teachers.
Please register for workshops through the link shown with each
workshop description. A nonrefundable registration fee is required.
The fee is $10.00 per person plus a $1.00 convenience fee per registration unless stated otherwise
in the workshop description. Should you have questions about workshop
registration please email (dnr.teachkids@illinois.gov) or call
(217-524-4126) the IDNR Division of Education. Should the IDNR cancel a workshop, registrants will be asked if they want to transfer
their registration to another ENTICE workshop or receive a refund. Some restrictions apply.
ENTICE workshops are available to teachers, home-schooling educators, nonformal educators and youth-group leaders in Illinois only.

What are those bumps on oak leaves? How did those swirly designs get into the wood? What made the D-shaped hole on this tree trunk? This workshop answers these questions and more. Take a closer look at the role insects play in trees and investigate the differences between commensalism, interdependence, and invasiveness while gaining knowledge and resources for your classroom. Course Name: Deer Diaries: Exploring White-Tailed Deer

The largest herbivore we have in Illinois is the White-tailed deer. Explore the life history and the challenges we have in the State around this ungulate. We will look at their life history and adaptations. We will look at Chronic Wasting Disease curriculum Prying into Prions: Investigating Chronic Wasting Disease. This educational unit for high school students can assist in studying prion diseases, including chronic wasting disease. Explore and learn about transmissible spongiform encephalopathies by examining the role of proteins in organisms, the chemistry and properties of proteins, the genetic processes that create proteins, and how proteins can become pathogenic. Study how chronic wasting disease affects Illinois white-tailed deer herd and what control measures are being taken.

Course Name: Blast From the Past: Witness Trees of Illinois

Discover the special place oak trees have in the history of Illinois and local ecosystems. Used by surveyors in the early 1800s, witness, or bearing trees, were sought out as landmarks for creating the earliest state land surveys and plat maps. Some of these trees are still standing today and can be used as a lens to bridge the gap between science and social studies. Through a variety of activities, learn the role these trees played in the urbanization of Illinois, why they are still important today, and how oak trees are critical to local ecosystems. Then complete a STEM-based learning project to catalog potential witness trees and conduct a tree survey. Take ideas back to the classroom to get your students engaged in similar data collection projects at school. Major portions of this program will be outdoors, and participants should dress for the weather.

Discover how to bring the fascinating world of Illinois mammals into your early childhood classroom! This hands-on workshop, designed specifically for early childhood educators, will explore ways to connect young learners with local wildlife through observation, play, and exploration. Participants will learn about common mammals found in Illinois, their tracks and signs, and seasonal behaviors. We'll spend time outdoors investigating habitats and modeling activities you can easily replicate with your students. You'll also receive a variety of resources, lesson ideas, and strategies to support science and nature learning aligned with the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards. Professional Development Hours will be provided.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
ENTICE workshops provide natural resources information, instructional
methods and supplemental educational materials. When incorporated
into lessons with students, the materials provided encourage
and promote stewardship of our state’s natural resources.
ENTICE also offers participants the opportunity to network with
other educators in a friendly, cooperative, learning environment.
Illinois ENTICE provides the following items for participants.
- free workshop/resource materials
- meals during the workshop
- opportunities to connect with natural resources and education professionals
- lesson plans and activities correlated to the Illinois Learning
Standards
- for teachers, Professional Development Hours.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Workshops are open to all educators and are designed for targeted
grade levels. Maximum enrollment for each course is 30 participants.
